Samsung Messages App Discontinuation & Transition to Google Messages
Samsung is officially discontinuing the Samsung Messages app in the US, requiring all users to switch to Google Messages. The formal end-of-service deadline is July 2026.
- Deadline: July 2026. After this cutoff, Samsung Messages will no longer support regular texting, though it will remain functional for emergency service numbers and designated emergency contacts.
- Impacted Devices: The shutdown affects Galaxy devices running Android 12 or newer.
- Unaffected Devices: Phones running Android 11 or older will still be able to use Samsung Messages.
- Newer Models: Recent releases, such as the Galaxy S26 series, already ship without Samsung Messages pre-installed.
Why Switch to Google Messages?
By making Google Messages the exclusive default, Samsung users gain several benefits:
- Full RCS Support: Access high-quality media sharing, group chats, and read receipts across all carriers via RCS (Rich Communication Services) features.
- AI Features: Integration with Gemini for smart replies and photo remixing.
- Enhanced Security: Real-time spam and scam detection powered by Google.
- Multi-Device Sync: Better connectivity across phones, tablets, and smartwatches.
How to Switch Now
If you want to transition ahead of the deadline, follow these steps:
- Open or download the Google Messages app from the Play Store.
- Tap “Set default SMS app” when prompted.
- Select Google Messages and confirm.
- Note: If you are on Android 12 or 13, you may need to manually move the Google Messages icon to your home screen dock, as it doesn’t always replace the old icon automatically.
